When Your Nervous System is Tired, Not Your Faith

Winter has a way of exposing what we usually push through.

Shorter days. Less sunlight. Slower mornings. A body that wants rest while life keeps demanding output.

Many women come to this season thinking, “I must be doing something wrong. ”More prayer should mean more peace… right?

But Scripture never teaches that exhaustion is a spiritual failure.

Often, what we label as “weak faith” is actually a tired nervous system trying to keep you safe.

Your body isn’t always rebelling against God. It’s responding to what it’s been carrying.

God designed you with rhythms—rest and work, stillness and movement, breath and action. When those rhythms are ignored for too long, the body speaks up. Not to shame you—but to invite you back into alignment.

This is not the season to force more. It’s the season to listen more.

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”— Isaiah 40:29

Notice what the verse does not say. It does not say, “He scolds the weary.” It does not say, “He waits until you try harder.”

God responds to weariness with strength, not disappointment.

The Neuroscience (Simply Put)

In winter, your nervous system is more prone to staying in a low-energy, protective state. Less light affects serotonin and circadian rhythms. Chronic stress keeps your body alert even when nothing is “wrong.”

When this happens:

  • motivation drops

  • emotions feel heavier

  • prayer can feel harder, not because God is distant—but because your body is overwhelmed

This is why gentle regulation matters. Calm precedes clarity.

A Grounding Practice for This Week

Try this once or twice a day:

  1. Sit comfortably and place one hand over your heart

  2. Take a slow inhale through your nose for 4 counts

  3. Exhale through your mouth for 6 counts

  4. Whisper (or think): “God is with me here.”

You are teaching your body what your spirit already knows: you are safe.

Where have you been judging yourself for something your body is simply asking help with?

What would change if you treated weariness with compassion instead of correction?

If this resonates, you may benefit from deeper support that integrates faith, emotional literacy, and nervous system science.

The Emotionally Rooted Masterclass was created for women who love God—but are tired of feeling stuck in survival mode.

You don’t need fixing. You need support that understands the whole of you.

Pause. Breathe. Reflect. Selah.
